USPA Joins the Clinical Labor Coalition in Urging Congress
to Take Action and Stop Cuts to Specialists

Without Congressional action, the clinical labor and EM cuts finalized in the

2023 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) will go into effect on January 1, 2023.  
 

WASHINGTON, DC — Earlier this week, the United Specialists for Patient Access (USPA) joined the Clinical Labor Coalition in sending a letter to Congress requesting that they “begin immediate deliberations…to mitigate forthcoming Medicare reimbursement cuts.” Without Congressional intervention, these significant cuts in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) will take effect on January 1, 2023. 
 

USPA has warned that these clinical labor cuts will disproportionately impact specialists who care for Medicare beneficiaries in community-based, office settings. 
 

The letter stresses how these cuts would worsen issues of health inequity and the nation’s resilience to pandemics by forcing many local providers to close their doors.  Additionally, the letter outlines what actions Congress could take to avoid disruptions in patient access to care.

“Deeper cuts to Medicare will be a disaster for seniors. Community-based specialty care is a critical part of our nation’s healthcare infrastructure. Without it, our healthcare system will struggle due to increased cost and diminished quality of care,” said Dr. Mark Garcia, USPA board member and CMO for American Vascular Associates. “We need Congress to step in and stop these clinical labor cuts, and our hope is that this letter will signal that office-based providers are willing and open to collaborating with Congress to identify policies that can protect both patients and specialists from payment reductions across the provider community. The dramatic year-to-year swings are causing chaos across our healthcare system.”
